Welcome to Parent Link

Welcome all to Woodland Park Academy's parent blog! This is the second school year we will post the blog and the first year that we will do it from the start of the school year until the end.
This blog has been created in hopes that parents, teachers and community members can share ideas, concerns and news related to student and family life at Woodland Park Academy. Please feel free to share ideas related to current topics listed on the blog, or just ask a question. Let's keep in mind that this is a community resource, not a forum for concerns related to specific incidents involving students. Our school office and staff members are always available to speak with you about your specific concerns. The idea is that our families can have a constructive conversation from the comfort of their own home or office without having to drive over to W.P.A.
So let's make it happen again this year! I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts and concerns as they relate to student and family life here at W.P.A. Remember, let's keep it cordial and enjoy!
If you are new to the blog click on the comments link below to see what discussions are happening. If you would like to post a comment, simply sign in and start posting. If you frequent the blog regularly, make sure to click on the comments link, as that is where most new information will be shared. We like to keep the explanation of the page up so folks can see what it is all about. Have fun!

  1. Those of you who have followed the blog in the past will notice that I have deleted all comments from the blog's main page in order to free up some space to get a new section started. I truly appreciate all of you who contributed over the second half of last school year and this past summer. Looking forward to hearing from all of you again soon. Mrs. Anderson, look out for that contest you talked about last spring as I think it will be a great way to get people involved. Thanks for the input!

  2. Last night I looked over the after school programs list and was very impressed. There were many new options as well as several favorites from last year. I am so happy that my children will be participating in a variety of programs. That is if the classes are not full. I know they will fill up fast. Thanks WPA for such great class options for our kids.

  3. The after school programs do look pretty good this time around. I know the kids always enjoy themselves and yes, they do fill up fast so fill out those forms and get them turned in. How was the first week? It seems that we are off to a pretty good start. Dismissal, as usual, will take some time for everyone to get used to but it gets better. Once the after school activities get into full swing and all of our bussers know exactly where they are going it will really speed things up. I am wondering what some of the kids came home excited about after the first week? Please share your stories with us and have a great week.

  4. Hello everyone. Well I wonder how people are feeling about things at WPA since we have started school. We are doing a few things a little different than we have in the past and I am especially curious to know what our families who have been here for a while think about them. The new parking lot procedure seems to really be making things go faster and the tape on the floors in the halls sure is keeping students on the right side. Let us know your thoughts. Post comments here on the blog or give any of our staff a call or e mail. Have a great weekend, don't forget there are a couple of family festivals going this weekend. One in downtown Grand Blanc and one in Fenton at St. John's church. The Holay Rosary festival may be this wekend too but I am not sure.

  5. Hello all. Did any families attend any of the family festivals around the county this past weekend? How about any activities going on this weekend? All of the local orchards should be open now and are always a fun family trip. Sloan Museum and the Children's Museum in Flint are also both affordable and fun places to visit. Please let us know if you have any other family activity ideas. Hope everyone has great weekend!

  6. Hi guys,
Friday is Grand Blanc High School's Homecoming football game. Every year before the game they put on a pretty nice parade through downtown Grnad Blanc. It is great for the kids and is free to attend. They shut down Saginaw St. at about 4:40 and the parade runs from 5:00 until about 6:15. Anyone else know of any fun family activities going on this weekend? Please share with us if you have anything interesting. Have a great weekend.

  7. Hello all,
Any fun family activities for the weekend? I know that a lot of us will be watching the big game between Michigan and Michigan State. It is at 3:30 on Saturday and can be seen on ABC 12. For those of you who may know someone on the autism spectrum I got the name of a good person to go see for a haircut. Her name is Jenifer and she works at Grondin's in the Grand Mall in Grand Blanc. Their phone number is 695-6767. Just call and make an appointment with her and I'm told she will do a good job. Have a great weekend!

  8. Hello all,
What did your kids say about the MEAP test? I know it made for some long days this week but the kids hung in there pretty good. I think a lot of classes were sort of "rewarded" today for all of their hard work with movies, field trips and various other activities. They all deserve it! Anyone know of any fun family activities this weekend? Everyone have a great weekend!

  9. Hello all,
With Halloween quickly approaching I know a fun activity some families like to do is pumpkin carving. With the cost of everything going up lately pumpkins have not been left out. A really good place that I've found the last few years that still has affordable pumpkins is the Flint Farmer's Market. It is downtown on Robert T Longway. They have all local farmers that bring in their products and it is a really neat, family friendly place. They are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Have a great weekend.

  10. We are new to WPA this year and have two children enrolled. I was able to visit during Harvest day and watch how much fun the kids were having. I was very impressed by the amount of activities the children had to do. It was obvious that a lot of hard work went into this special day. Great job WPA staff!

  11. Hello all,
Hope everyone had an exciting weekend. There were so many activities going on in the area that I didn't even bother to post my usual list of family activities. I have heard so many stories of neat things the kids did over the weekend. Did anyone else get a chance to visit on Harvest Day? What did you think? Any ideas on how to improve Harvest Day? We would love to hear your thoughts. Remeber to get out and vote today!

  12. Hello all,
Hope everyone had a chance to meet with their students teachers last week during conferences. How did they go? If you didn't get a chance to please call and set something up. Report cards will be out soon and I'm anxious to hear what you guys think about our new grading system. It is a standards based grading system and it may look very different from what you are used to. If you have any questions once you see the report card please contact us here at the school.

  13. Hi guys,
Did you guys hear about Coach Steve from the Detroit Pistons being at our school yesterday? He came over and did a really neat assembly on being a good student. For those of you that have been here in the past you may have heard about this before as Coach Steve has been to our building for the last 4 years. The really neat thing about his visit is that he always leaves every student in the school a FREE ticket to an upcoming Pistons game. The forms should come home with your students today or tomorrow. Please fill out the form and return it to me as soon as possible. All forms are due by Dec 3rd. Have a great rest of the week!

  14. Hello! We are new this year to WPA and have been loving our experience. We are concerned about the afterschool activities ending already and not starting up again until end of february. We don't have latchkey available because we did not realize these would not be offered throughout the school year. We are in a bit of a jam as we both work/go to school and can't always get there at the end of the school day. Any possibility these will be offered earlier in the calendar?

  15. Hello all,
As for our after school programs, yes, they did in fact end the first round of programs yesterday. The reason we don't run them through the rest of December and January is because there are so many breaks and we would cancel several days if we were running programs. We also hold staff meetings every week throughout January and it would be very difficult to balance all of these things with our after school programs. Latchkey is available on a same day as sign up basis, there is no waiting period or waiting list. Dana Voss runs our Latchkey program and the main office can get you her contact information. Hope this helps. Have a great weekend.

  16. Hi guys,
I know some of you went to the Pistons games that we were able to get the tickets for over the last week, any good stories from the games? Anyone have any interesting travel plans or other fun activities coming up over the break? There are many fun activities like bowling, skating or going the movies that I am sure alot of us will enjoy over the next couple of weeks. Anybody have a favorite hill that they like to go sledding at? When I was growing up it was the big hill at Mott College on Court St. They have since made some changes so you can't really sled there anymore but I know there are still some good ones out there. Regardless of what you do I hope that everyone will have a fun and peaceful break and enjoy the extra time with your families.

  17. Hello all,
Long time no posts. How was everyones' break? I was hoping that some people would have some thoughts on our bus situation. For those of you who may not have heard, MTA will no longer be transporting students to any of the charter schools in the area. It is an unfortunate situation, but it could also be looked at as a real opportunity. Hopefully we can come up with a plan that will still allow everyone who wants transportation to WPA access to it. Any ideas?

  18. Hello all,
Well it looks like we have found a solution to our transportation problem, at least for the rest of this year. It sounds like a lot of that had to do with all of you that went to the MTA meetings that were open to the public. We had a great showing and some people made some pretty powerful presentations. The kids chipped in and did their part by writing letters and stating their case. What a great show of school pride! Hope everyone has a great weekend.

  19. Hi guys,
Just wanted to remind you all of the benefit dinner thats happening here at WPA tonight. It is $10 a person or $25 per family. The dinner is being catered by Italia Gardens as well as a few other local places and donations by various staff members. The dinner is to benefit Mrs. Dana Voss and her family and Mrs. Janet Ash and her family. Both have been struck by some devastating news as of late and this will really help to cover some of the different expenses they are having to endure. There will be raffle prizes and give aways to go along with the great food. Hope some of you can make it. Have a great weekend.

  20. Hello all,
Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on our report cards. We have now had 2 go home with our new grading format and I was looking for a little feedback. Do you like it? Is it easy to read? Can you understand what the grades mean? I would love to hear what your thoughts are.
